Miami owns a 2 1/2-game cushion over Boston and opened a
four-game homestand Wednesday with a 93-91 victory over Atlanta.
Alonzo Mourning scored 25 points and has led the Heat in scoring
six of the last seven contests. Mourning is tied with Michael Finley of Dallas for seventh in
the league at 22.6 points per contest. Jamal Mashburn scored 12 points for Miami, which played without
starting point guard Tim Hardaway, who was nursing a jammed
right knee. He is questionable for tonight.
Miami has won four straight meetings with Washington, including
a 104-95 triumph on November 12 as Mourning collected 25 points,
nine rebounds and seven blocks. Washington was outscored 31-8 in the second quarter and fell for
the second time in four contests in Friday's 118-85 pounding by
Charlotte. Rookie Richard Hamilton scored 16 points and Rod
Strickland added 11 as the Wizards fell to 0-2 on a four-game
road trip. Juwan Howard leads the Wizards, averaging 13.1 points per
contest, with Hamilton second at 10.9.
